Pilates and Energy: What Fuels You—and What Drains You?

Three hikers pose joyfully in front of a large rock. One holds trekking poles, and another has sunglasses on head. Lush greenery surrounds them.
Out in nature is a sure-fire way to energize me!

Pilates and energy go hand in hand—because how we move affects how we feel, and how we feel influences everything else. Whether it’s physical, emotional, or mental, energy plays a central role in how we show up for ourselves, for others, and for life.

This week, I’ve been reflecting on all the ways energy shows up—and slips away—in midlife. From the food we eat to the way we move through our Pilates practice and daily routines, to the people we surround ourselves with, energy is either flowing in… or being drained out.

“Energy cannot be created or destroyed—but it can be protected, replenished, and redirected.”

— Adapted from the First Law of Thermodynamics

What Is Energy, Really?

Energy isn’t just about calories in and calories out. It’s:

  • The stability and strength you build through Pilates and intentional movement

  • The brain fog (or clarity) that follows a night of tossing and turning

  • The spark you get from a great conversation—or the heaviness left after a tough one

  • The difference between “I should do this” and “I want to do this”

Sometimes, your body feels like it’s running on empty—and that’s your sign to listen, pause, and shift your movement, mindset, or expectations.

Who—or What—Is Draining You?

What are your energy vampires, or even better yet who?

Let’s talk about energy vampires.

These sneaky drains can take many forms:

  • People who leave you feeling wiped after every interaction

  • To-do lists that never quit

  • The pull to do more, even when your tank is low

  • Screens, scrolling, and sensory overload

Protecting your energy doesn’t mean cutting everything out—it means getting clear on what fills your bucket and what pokes holes in it.

Sometimes it’s as simple as subbing in a gentle Pilates session or breath-focused mobility work instead of pushing through an intense workout. Movement should give you energy—not rob it.

Pilates, Boundaries, and Business Shifts: Maintaining my Energy

I’ve been doing my own energy inventory lately—asking what actually fills me up. I’ve found that when I’m fully present in my teaching, when I get to guide women through breath, alignment, and mindful movement, I’m energized.

But when I stretch myself too thin—like forcing myself to blog weekly out of habit or obligation—the joy (and the energy) starts to fade.

So here’s my shift:

Blog posts will now show up once or twice a month—when I feel inspired and energized to write, not just when the calendar says I should.

Community is Something to Build

Community Is My Energy Source

You know what gives me the most energy? Community.

Recently, I invited a few clients to join me at a writing workshop led by the talented Morgan Harper Nichols. We wrote, reflected, and followed it up with dinner and deep conversation. It was an evening of connection, shared insight, and nourishment—for the soul, not just the body.

This is the kind of energy I want more of.

It’s why I lead retreats.

It’s why I offer private sessions rooted in personalized movement.

It’s why I keep creating spaces for women to move, breathe, and thrive—together.
